Tarwirri is pleased to host this year’s National Indigenous Legal Conference (NILC) in Naarm. The conference brings together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous legal professionals, scholars, activists, law students, graduates and community leaders from across the country.

It provides a culturally safe forum for examining and discussing important legal and policy matters affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples nationwide. The conference will address critical legal, justice and social issues, share best practices and foster collaboration.

The NILC conference will explore key issues such as the path to Treaty, Native Title, self-determination, truth and justice, the Stolen Generations, cultural safety in workplaces, increasing the presence of First Nations lawyers at the Bar, and protecting the intellectual property of First Nations artists.

The First Nations Law Students Day is a unique opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander law students to network, discuss important issues and connect in a relaxed setting. Hear from esteemed First Nations speakers in the legal sector and enjoy a complimentary light lunch and drinks.

NILC Welcome Reception

Tarwirri invites NILC 2024 registrants to a free pre-conference Welcome Reception. It's a chance for delegates, speakers, and supporters to network before the conference begins. Complimentary drinks and canapés will be served.

Tarwirri Gala Dinner and National First Nations Law Awards

Wednesday 4 December, 5.30-10pm

Join us for a night of celebration, featuring a traditional smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country conducted by a Wurundjeri Elder. Enjoy speeches from prominent members of the legal sector and captivating performances by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. 

The National First Nations Law Awards are a way of recognising the contributions that First Nations peoples make to the legal profession and our communities.

Nominations for the Tarwirri National First Nations Law Awards close at 5pm (AEDT), Friday 25 October 2024. Please download a nomination pack and submit the nomination form with supporting materials to info@tarwirri.com.au by the closing date.

  • National First Nations Senior Lawyer of the Year

    A current First Nations Lawyer (with 5 years or more post admission experience) making significant contributions through their role.

  • National First Nations Junior Lawyer of the Year

    A current First Nations Junior Lawyer (with less than 5 years post admission experience) making significant contributions through their role.

  • National First Nations Legal Researcher of the Year

    A current First Nations 'legal researcher' making significant contributions through their role as an academic, researcher, or advocate for law reform, among others.

  • National First Nations Law Student of the Year

    A current First Nations law student in their 2nd+ year of a combined law degree or 1.5 years+ of a 3 year+ law degree.

  • National First Nations Barrister of the Year

    A current First Nations Barrister who is making significant contributions to First Nations peoples through their role as a Barrister.

  • National First Nations Law Firm of the Year

    A predominately owned First Nations Law Firm making significant changes and contributions to First Nations communities.
