Meet Tarwirri Member Jarrara Atkinson

Jarrara is a proud Yorta Yorta and Bangerang man who grew up in Barmah and moved to Naarm nine years ago to pursue a career in law. He is a Judge’s Associate to His Honour Judge Johns in the County Court, Victoria. In his free time, Jarrara enjoys being active, including activities such as hiking, going to the gym, or playing sports.

Jarrara, how long have you been a member of Tarwirri?

I have been a member of Tarwirri for four years now.

Why did you join Tarwirri?

I first became involved with Tarwirri when I was in my first year of university, seeking assistance with my CV. I also wanted to meet like-minded Mob who also had an interest in law. I wanted to support and help create a better future for all future generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lawyers.

How has Tarwirri supported you over the years?

Tarwirri has supported me in various ways over the years, from providing me with opportunities to attend events and networking sessions to assisting me with career guidance, including CV and job searching, which guided me to my now current role.

Why did you decide to study law and become a lawyer/legal professional?

Having grown up and seeing Mob move through the criminal system and how many begin their lives disadvantaged; this prompted me to want to specialise in criminal law and further prevent our Mob from being in a custodial environment.

What area of law do you find most interesting?

I find criminal law the most interesting area of law, especially with my role sitting in criminal law and Koori Court.

If you could describe Tarwirri in less than three words, what would it be?
Driven, ambitious and enthusiastic!
